Jewelry Questions

What materials do you use to make your jewelry?

The simple answer: a variety!

We use a lightweight, polymer clay for our clay earrings so they won't feel heavy.

Our necklaces are made with your choice of brass or gold-filled chains.

Other materials we use include leather, wood and resin.

Will your earrings work for me if I have sensitive ears?

Yes! We use high quality materials for our jewelry - especially our earrings.

Our earrings are hypoallergenic, nickel-free, lead-free and safe for sensitive ears.

All of our earrings are made with surgical steel, or 18k gold-plated surgical steel hooks, hoops and posts.

What is the difference between brass and gold filled?

Brass is an affordable metal that has a golden tone and bears a close resemblance to gold.

Now, if you want to get technical...

Brass jewelry is crafted from an alloy constituting two metals – copper and zinc.

Brass will naturally oxidize (darken) as it is exposed to moisture in the air and on the skin. It can easily be polished back to a shiny state with a jewelry cloth.

Gold-filled is the closest thing to solid gold without the price. It is non-tarnish, hypoallergenic and long lasting.

Now, if you want to get technical...

It is not an alloy. It is a layered material constructed in two or three layers of gold with a core metal of brass or copper.

The layers of gold are pressure bonded at various high temperatures to result in a much thicker gold layer compared to gold-plated or gold coated jewelry.

Gold-filled jewelry supplies are legally required to be 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. This 5% is described by the karatage of the gold alloy on the surface. Most material is 12kt or 14kt gold-filled.

Profit Donation

How much of the profits are donated?

10% of all profits are donated to Food For The Hungry.

Where are the profits donated?

10% of all profits are donated to a Christian non-profit organization called Food For The Hungry.

This organization was selected because they provide life-changing resources such as clean water, medical aid, food, equal educational opportunities to girls and boys, vocational training and empowerment in the midst of unimaginable hardships across the globe.

From their website:

The world is hungry, but the emptiness goes far beyond the table. The need is physical and spiritual. People hunger for opportunity, starve for resources, and have been stripped of value. These injustices keep us up at night.

How often are profits donated?

Profits will be donated one time annually after the end of each calendar year.

How will I know how much is donated?

2024 is the first year that this donation will take place. We plan to provide transparency in the donation process by linking a page here on the blog with a donation statement.

Can I give above and beyond a shop purchase?

YES! Here is a direct link to give to this cause: https://www.fh.org/give
